There was a communal sigh of relief with a non-rainy day for a change and positive euphoria when the sun appeared for quite a lot of the round.
Three matches were hotly contested having finished on the extra hole. The remainder were 2&1 wins and one by three holes. The course generally played well with the greens pretty fast. A few were a bit on the bumpy side but accurate. Buggies were allowed on the last 9 holes as the front 9 was considered too wet.
Two extra players came along and had a round with Nick Trantom who had a walkover due to Phil Faiers having to return suddenly to the UK.
The results are:
Mike Thackwray beat Mark McNulty
Roger Barton beat Gérard Bouchet
Nick Trantom went through on a walkover
Don Dawson beat Rob Jones
Mike Matthews beat Pete iles
Bob Hay beat Ross Coleman
Martyn Hayward beat Richard Gibson
Bill Whyman beat Clive Robinson
The second round will see Mike Thackwray versus Roger Barton; Nick Trantom versus Don Dawson; Mike Matthews versus Bob Hay; and Martyn Hayward versus Bill Whyman.
Rob Sexton won the putting competition with 28 putts, Rob Jones the runner-up with 30 putts.
The lunch was excellent as usual at Bagnères.
Many thanks to Roy Sherwin for his sponsorship, patience and excellent organisation.
Round Two will be at Lourdes on April 10th. Those no longer in the competition are encouraged to come along for a good golfing day out and what promises to be another excellent lunch.
