What's not to understand?
Simples. An individual Stableford competition using only three clubs, full handicap and a length of string to use in lieu of shots. Well, some got tied in knots and threw their string away in disgust. Others thought the string was in lieu of handicap. Some forgot their scissors, others left their scissors on the course. But despite acting like a bunch of five-year-olds the Musketeers enjoyed their Fun Day.The range of scores was massive. 16 at the bottom end (no names, no pack drill) to a supreme 49 points by Roger Barton. The Club Captain, Jean-Marc Doré, joined us and came in with a respectable 38 points. Though he got no brownie points for playing golf on his wife's birthday — brave man. And we had two other guests, Richard Gibson's son Sam and Nick Trantom's son-in-law Tom. The weather was reasonably kind, the course was in great condition and there were some superb highlights. For me, it was a hole-in-one on the 10th, thanks to a metre of string. Roger had a net eagle on the 7th, Nick had a net eagle on the 2nd, Martyn had a net eagle on the 13th, Rob Jones had net eagles on the 2nd and 8th, Phil Lingard's net eagle was on the 10th and Fergus had net eagles on the 6th and 8th. John Wilkinson soroed 5 points on two par 3s – the 4th and 10th, and Clive Robinson parred both the 8th and 9th, scoring a total of 8 points over the two holes. All in all it was a great day, lots of laughs, not many tantrums, good banter at the bar and over lunch. The format was a little complicated for the former captains of industry to understand, but despite that we may try it again next year.
