Clive Robinson, Richard Gibson and I were first off the first at just after 8.00am. The sun was slanting low and making ball sighting difficult on the 3rd and 5th, but you can't complain about sunshine in late September. Clive played some excellent golf and not only improved his Eclectic scores on three holes, but also shot 90 gross — three shots better than his handicap. He was delighted to hand in his card for a handicap cut, which has duly taken place and he is reduced from 21.2 down to 20. Well done Clive. (Captain tips his hat to Clive for handing his card in).
However he was at one stage in danger of not completing his round. Richard was just short of the 135m marker on the left of the 17th fairway. Clive and I were a little further on but stood well off the fairway almost level with Richard. Trusty 4-iron in hand Richard thwacked the ball, the ball thwacked the 135m marker and ricocheted in between Clive and I at head height. It sounded like an exocet as it went past us. We eventually tracked Richard's ball, it had cleared all the rough, cleared the 9th fairway and was neatly nestled in light rough between the 9th and 18th fairways. Had the ball hit one of us it would have been at least a hospital job, and possibly straight to the morgue.
We got back to the bar shaken, but not stirred, to find there were lots of improvements to Eclectic scores, including two birdies from leader-of-the-pack Mike Rawlings. It was also noted that one three-ball that had started at the 4th were so tempted by the proximity of the bar when they reached the 18th that they decided not to play holes 1, 2 and three and had three beers instead. Oh the joys of being a Musketeer!
