They hollow tined the greens this week. Then they spread several tons of gloopy sand over them. Putting was a nightmare. You know how when you roll a snowball in the snow it gathers more snow and gets bigger, that is what the golf balls were doing in our November Medal round on Friday.
I five-putted from four feet on the first, and you tend to mentally give up after an abomination like that. On three holes when we pulled the flag from the hole it took the plastic cup with it — so not the best conditions for a stroke play contest. As a result we took an executive decision not to increase anyone's handicaps. However, there was one reduction. Stuart McLaren had been in Scotland all summer (he says he was working, but it probably involved a lot of golf) and he returned to the ranks of the Musketeers to win the November Medal with a creditable net 72. One shot away in second was Fergus with a very steady round marred only by one triple bogey. His playing partners, Mike Rawlings and I, didn't fare so well — Mike missed a two foot putt for an eleven and I five putted for a nine. However, Mike more than made up for his dozen on the 7th with a birdie on the 18th pushing him further into the lead in the Eclectic. Not the best course conditions, but the weather was great and the views of the Pyrenees were breathtaking. The drinks in the sunshine after the round with the usual banter reminded me that it's not all about the golf
