The competition was billed as "all the threes", so not only were players restricted to three clubs, they also had three Mulligans and three bonus holes which tripled their Stableford points on those holes. The bad news was that any three putt would mean a point deducted from their score.
The choice of clubs was interesting, most people going for a 3-wood or 5-wood with a fairly lofty iron and a putter. Some chose not to take a putter and chose to putt using their wood. This was not a good choice for Roger Barton. Normally Roger putts left-handed despite being a right-handed player. He chose to putt using his right-handed 5-wood and ended up 3-putting eight times. He 'blobbed' 10 holes and came in with a record-breaking 5 points and a sheepish look on his face!
All the other scores were in the 20s, 30s and 40s. In third place Fergus won a half bottle of wine with 43 points. In second place, one point better was Jean-René who who a bottle of wine. But the clear winner with 49 points was Noud Janssen who won a lovely Magnum of Pellhaut Marcottes.
Stories were told, beer was drunk, fun was poked and some claimed bragging rights — like Paul Wilding who managed to score 15 points on one hole! — and all agreed it was a crazy, but fun formula. And perhaps it was good practice for next week's Expatria and Ted Butler outings.
